"If they can use a canvas of Prince Edward Island for a little red-headed girl named Anne, or a backdrop of the West Coast for a band of idiosyncratic loggers called The Beachcombers, then surely its Jaspers turn." Having said that, John McLay went to work On Mountaintop Rock. Johns youthful personality and sense of humour shine through in his writing. He also has a respect for knowledge, which makes this book extra rewarding.Using a Freefall writing style developed by W.O. Mitchell and Barbara Turner Vesselago, McLay produced the first draft of his story. Freefall encourages writers to trust their own minds, to jump right in, to keep the hands moving across the keyboard; and having started, not to stop. With the first draft complete, McLay then went back to rewrite, edit and polish. www.freefallwriting.com. Johns career is rooted in broadcasting; he taught radio and television at a college level for over 20 years. He believes in, and promotes strongly, the teaching of media literacy in schools, and is invited regularly to speak to students about the effects of the electronic media on society. He has worked internationally as a freelance producer; his work has taken him to London, Paris, Geneva and Quebec City. It is in Quebec City that the story of On Mountaintop Rock begins. John immigrated to Canada from Great Britain with his mother and father in 1953. Raised in Jasper, he now lives in Edmonton with his wife Jacqueline and their young son Jack Contact the author at jmclay@interbaun.com |
